  23. Yes, I have seen these halts, and they are as extreme with Couriers as
  24. they are with Sportsters.  And they *are* worse with the 33.6 firmware, a
  25. lot worse (used to be less than a second, now its sometimes 30-45), even
  26. when directly connected to each other, so it can't be the lines or the
  27. "other modem".  Fortunately, they are only this bad if you are using v.34
  28. or v.34+.  If you turn off v.8 so it uses v.FC instead, the max connect
  29. rate will be 28.8, but for the most part it gets rid of the pauses. 
  30. Depending on how new your USR is, this is generally done with either
  31. S54.7=1 or S32.1=0.
